El secreto de sus ojos (The Secret in Their Eyes)

I finally got the chance to watch last years winner of best foreign film.  The Secret in Their Eyes is the story of a retired legal counselor writing a book about one of the "unresolved" cases he worked on.  The viewer is taken on a journey with him as he rediscover's everything about the case, the rape and murder of a young woman.  This isn't a who done it movie but it does have some twists and turns so I don't wanna give away too much more of the plot.  It is character driven more than plot driven, but its still very exciting.  There's a 5 minute long shot in the middle that starts off from a helicopter view of a Football(soccer) stadium and goes into the crowd to close up of the main characters and keeps going and ends up as a chase scene.   I know they had to use some sort of cgi tomfoolery for it but it was an incredibly awesome shot.  And the ending is just fantastic, had me grinning ear to ear.  I'd need to watch the White Ribbon again but I might prefer that to SiTE by a smidgen, but it deserves the oscar as much as WR does.  Go see it now! Its Argentinian if that matters.

Everything will be Ok. more weirdness from Don Hertfield (Rejected)

http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/vjmZX2z9WPs/

While Rejected's weirdness was more for a comedic effect. Everything Will Be Ok uses it as a high disturbing look into the life of Bill.  He's a sick man and we just follow him through his Philosophical musing throughout day to day life.  Its down right creepy in parts.  Very, very good please check it out.  :)

I'M HERE – A LOVE STORY IN AN ABSOLUT WORLD

I'M HERE – A LOVE STORY IN AN ABSOLUT WORLD

You should watch this. Now. I'll wait. Its the new Spike Jonze short. He directed things like Being John Malkovich, Adaptation and Where the Wild Things Are. This is amazingly beautiful, wonderful, film about love. I wish I could do and give like in the movie. The music is just perfect for the mood of this. Spike Jonze is one of my top ten favorite directors now. He needs to start making more movies. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Prince of Pesia

First of all Jake Gyllenhaal was chosen to play the main character because he looks like the character in the video game not because he looks Persian.

Prince of Persia is the very definition of a typical mediocre summer blockbuster.  It looks good and is well acted, but the plot and the action have been done to death.  The ending is actually really typical in movies containing time travel. highlight the next part to show spoilers The ending of going back to the beginning and making it so nothing has happened I first saw in the anime Serial Experiments Lain (excellent anime) I didn't like the ending then but I still loved the anime for the journey.  it was also used in Butterfly Effect.  In Prince of Persia its used and it just emphasizes the mediocrity of the rest of the movie.  Now as for the action they really could have done more with the parkour elements somehow, its been over used in recent cinema so they should have made it really grand in the movie but it just came out feeling the same as other movies.  There are some good set pieces though, coming from the director of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, thats not surprising.

Prince of Persia is an thoroughly mediocre offering into the blockbuster genre.

Allergies making me drowsie

So for the past couple of days, I've  been doing pretty much nothing but sleeping.  Seems like everybody decided to mow the grass yesterday and today, mostly the grass on the side of the road peeps.  And now my  allergies are in full force and making me hella drowsy.  Yesterday after I picked my sister up from class I slept from 2-11.  Today I slept additionally 1-830pm after my Japanese class. I could probably sleep forever more right now.  But I have school work to do.  I can't keep up with with this as much as I want to, but when I finish my homework by this weekend I should be able to. Keep moving forward peeps!

now DVD rentals are free but blu-rays and games are $1 off.  so 50 cent blu-rays and $1 dollar game rentals! which is still pretty good.  :D

Cloverfield.

I love Godzilla movies. I grew up watching them as a kid so when I heard they were making a new monster destroying city movie I was stoked.  I saw the trailer and expectation immediately lowered. I didn't like the shaky cam from the second two Bourne movies and went in expecting same. Which is good since I was then blown away by Cloverfield.  The marketing for this was great since they didn't show anything at all, and all the website stuff was excellent. I loved the use of shaky cam in this.  Unlike the Bourne movies, Cloverfield does not use one second or less editing cuts. It uses long takes, which is why I probably like it more.
As far as characters go, I would totally be like the main character going after his damsel in distress, and I felt the rest of the characters were pretty well rounded out taking time at the beginning during the going away party to flesh them out a little bit. The friends didn't have to come along but stuck by the "hero" all the way through.  The CGI was fantastic for the budget, heck for any budget.  I love how they put little things in the movie and online to help figure out how things happened.  Though its short run time its perfectly paced but also doesn't over stay its welcome.  This movie had me literally on the edge of my seat the entire time.  Amazingly enough I was also on the edge of my seat for the second and third viewing as well which is incredibly rare for a movie :O

Matt Reeves is also directing the upcoming remake of Let the Right one In simply entitled Let Me In(after the original book).  The original is the best vampire movie since Interview with a Vampire.  While most remakes are terrible, I'm looking forward to this, one because of the director and two Chloe Moretz who was awesome in Kick-ass as well as her small roll in (500) days of summer.  I'll write reviews for all of these films later :D

MY SPOON IS TOO BIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

icheckmovies.com movie list.

http://www.icheckmovies.com/profile/sideburnz/

This is my check list at icheckmovies.  Its a website containing lists of movies.  The IMDB top 250, AFI top lists,  Academy Award winners for best pic and best foreign language, a bunch of critics list including Roger Ebert's best movies, best winners at film festivals and many many others.  I currently have 1486 checks on the site.  I've watched many more movies though. According to Netflix I've rated 4396 item some of those are tv show seasons though.  But icheckmovies is a great site.  Its sort of like a contest to see who can see all the movies on those lists.  Some lists are harder with more obscure.  And of course the IMDB lists are constantly changing when vote counts on films change as well as other lists adding movies such as Ebert adding a movie to his best movies list or the latest best picture winner.
check out the shorts list
http://www.icheckmovies.com/list/shorts/sideburnz/

it contains some great short films you've never heard of and it is constantly changing so new stuff to see is on their daily.  It does have the classic Wallace and Grommit, Looney Tunes, Mickey Mouse stuff as well.

K-ON!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fia0iyvd0Dw

K-ON! is a slice of life anime about a group of high school girls forming a band in a light music club (K-ON!) The main thing that stands out in this to me is the music.  It was surprisingly really good.  The relationships between the girls are strong and develop nicely over the series.  Unlike most slice of life animes this one has more of a plot than usual.  It focuses on them getting ready for various concerts and school festivals.  Seriously the music is just fantastic.  Its not really you're typical J-pop stuff.    Its has a more rock a little punk in it. But it seriously is awesome. And the music videos they use for the ending theme (as above) are tons better than anything put out by any main stream pop artists over here.

Over all its just a really fun anime to follow. Season 2 is about to end and they're about to graduate high school! I have no idea if they're going to follow them throughout college.  I hope so.  Normally I like it when animes have a set number of episodes with a well thought out plot arc over so many episodes but with slice of life stuff like this they have the potential to go on and on and on.  and of course the Kawaii factor is way high in this one! watch it!

all hail nannerpuss!

they call me the nannerpuss nannerpuss
and guess what
I like pancakes!
Its not time for a serious breakfast
its time for NANNERPUSS!

Lucky Star!

http://youtu.be/su4wGRhujnM

Lucky Star is a slice of life anime about an otaku(anime nerd) high school girl and her friends.  This show is just hilarious.  The main character is a fan of the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and is also voiced by the same actress as Haruhi Suzimiya! There are also a few episodes that deal with the goings on of amateur manga artists and is rather informative.  I'm wondering how I should review this as its rather difficult because each episode is random as can be, which is part of the charm of these slice of life animes.  Some have a small over all story arch but this one doesn't.  Its really just a crescendo of randomness and adding of characters climaxing in the vid I posted above.  Also to note is that if you don't watch much anime and only know it from kid stuff pokemon, digimona, and the ultra violent, overly sexed, gratuitous pantie shots, mech animes ect. . . You'll be surprised by this.  The characters are going for the kawaii (cute) factor instead of sexy, and the plots besides those having to do with anime, manga, and dating sim games is relatively sex free.  Also an odd thing would be the lack of boyfriends or boy crazy high school girls in Lucky Star which is odd coming from American teen programming which is pretty much about nothing but relationships.  If you're interested in something fun and light hearted check out Lucky Star.  That song in the vid is just insanely addictive.  Just listen to the bass line to it.  Its really, really good. And be prepared for ultra cuteness galore.  The Japanese are the best and being cute!

No more good war movies.

There hasn't been a good war movie (ww1 on) since Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line came out.  Windwakers was meh. We We Soldiers was just ok.  Inglorious Basterds doesn't count :P I don't even want to mention that Michael Bay "film" The next good one will probably be Spielberg's upcoming War Horse.  Right now I'm in the middle of watching Patton.  Needless to say its a classic.  They don't make them like this any more.  George C. Scott is bigger than life and completely owns the screen.  The tank battle was fantastic.  Dozens of tanks, people explosions an amazing feet.  Its one of those Academy Award best picture winners where there really is no question its the best of the year. I couldn't name the other nominees off the top of my head right now.  Looking at IMDB Altman's MASH and Jack Nicholson in Five Easy Pieces were also nominated so it was a good set of nominees that year.  There's not much I can say about Patton that hasn't already been said.  An amazing movie about an amazing man.

Clash of the Clash of the Titans

The original Clash of the Titans was Ray Harryhausen's last film that he did special effects for and like all of his movies the models look great and move smoothly.  The plot is he story of Perseus and his trek to stop the Kraken which original was not from Greek mythology but the name of a sea monster from Scandinavian myths. While it does stray a bit from Greek myths it does stay true for the most part.  The acting is ok, the lead is nothing special, but over all its a fun adventure flick with some good suspenseful parts such as the fight against Medusa.  A remake with updated effects came out this year and while it could have been good they went ahead and screwed up the Greek Mythology even more. Hades is in it and of course like the Disney animated film Hercules they have to make him evil.  Why just because the ruler of your gods underworld is evil (satan) do you always have to go and make Hades evil.  He was as evil as any other god. Which is to say not at all.  They're petty and selfish, but never really evil. Hades was the original emo.  He was content in staying in the underworld brooding.  In this Crash of the Titans they have Perseus lose his family because of the gods and he becomes pissed off and emo about it.   The effects are fine, nothing to write home about in this age of cgi blockbusters.  The action is ok, when the slow motion is used it evokes laughter.  Mostly if I wasn't into Greek mythology so much I would have maybe enjoyed it a bit more but instead its just another hohum action movie.  One funny thing to note is that Liam Neeson plays Zeus and Ralph Fiennes plays Hades reprising their rivalry from Schindler's list. Watching the original and then the remake back to back I definitely prefer the original.

John Huston looks like Ian McKellan

John Huston did the voice of Gandalf in  the animated Hobbit movie and Return of the King movie in the 70s and he looks like Ian McKellan who plays Gandalf in the 2001-2003 LOTR movies! :O  John Huston is also the famous director of seveal Bogart movies, including the Maltese Falcon, Key Largo, and Treasure of the Sierra Madre among others.

Kitties in old movies

I always find it odd and funny to find kittens and cats in old movies.  I'm currently watching Frank Capra's "You Can't Take it With You" made in 1938.  Everything about it is completely different from what we see today.  Then there's a kitten and its all adorable and everything and its just like it is now a days.

Netflix instant watch is great but I have to turn up the sound way too much.  When I play something on youtube or a video I downloaded its at deafening levels compared to what I have to have the volume at when I'm watching something on Netflix instant.  whats up with that?

The Adventures of Prince Achmed

The Adventures of Prince Achmed is a german silent animated film from 1926 and uses a very basic style of animation where the director cut out black cardboard pieces and used thread on movable parts to animate them.  Similar to how Matt Parker and Trey Stone first started doing South park.  The cutouts are intricately detailed and amazing to look at.  The movie is actually a series a short stories based off Arabian Nights including Aladdin and the Magic Lamp.  Any fan of fantasy and animation should definitely check it out.  Its on Netflix Instant Watch.

herro

herro, if anybody reads this i love movies and anime.  idk what i'm going to watch tonight but tomorrow I'll be getting Clash of the Titans (2010) on bluray from netflix.  I like the directors other stuff so I should like this one despite mixed reviews on it.
